AWESOME

More than I could have expected. It's hard to even come close to the original movie cast, but this cast is pretty close. The sets and lighting were visually stunning and captured the emotions of the story. The children were adorable with out being annoying. Enjoyed the added moments of humor in the script. I'll just say the "flags' were unnerving but necessary for the backdrop of Edelwiess. The way the captain performed it last night 4/8/17...perfection. Thank you all for working so hard.

OUTSTANDING!

Even though this show is a very familiar one, the cast made it feel new again. All of the voices were extraordinary and the staging was wonderful. I would highly recommend seeing it!

WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE!

What an exceptional performance by all of the actors and actresses! The vocalists, instrumentalists, scenery, lighting and acoustics were all superb! I felt it could well compete with the best of Broadway performances. If you're a Sound of Music lover, as I am, treat yourself. You woun't be disappointed! The Merriam Theater is a beautiful venue and the staff were very welcoming and personable.

FANTASTIC

What a joy this play was last night. Such a talented cast. The children were so good. It’s a feel good event and beloved by the audience. The show stopper was “Climb every mountain” by Ms Kidwell..superb. We ate dinner at Buds & Marilyn’s first and often go to Amis which I prefer. Who needs NY? Not us! Philly is so easy and such fun. Only issue is very close quarters at the Merriam.

GLAD I WENT

Great dinner at Byrd & Baldwin before the show. Chrysler venue: unfortunate setup of restrooms (men one side; women other) with the lobby not being big enough. No middle aisle so lots of stepping over people. But good sight lines, acoustics and leg room. Show: fantastic. Maria was a talented singer and Mother Abbess was exceptional. Set, lighting, sound and stage movement great. Orchestra was great and the cast meshed well with the musicians. The cast matched my vision after watching the movie so many times. The kids were great. They could have left out the 2 new songs to shorten it. The love between the 16/17 yea- olds was not developed. The end of the singing contest and the final scene were awkward but I can't put my finger on why. I was emotionally moved during the performance and I enthusiastically stood with others for the final ovation.

MAGICAL

What a remarkable magical well executed show. From the first note to the last it was a wonderful show.

AMAZING SHOW

Saw this show twice and I could have watched it again! Amazing re-creation of the movie, not exactly the same, but the changes were interesting and fresh! The cast was incredible; their voices, enthusiasm and genuine portrayal of the characters was transformative! Recommend as a must see even if you aren’t familiar with the movie! No seat was a bad seat. The second show we went to was with my mom and we needed wheelchair access. The staff were so helpful and seats were great!!

OUTSTANDING

Very entertaining and the cast exceeded my expectations. The children were very talented and enjoyable to watch. The sets are impressive for an off Broadway production.

BROADWAY SHOW CALIBER

This is a musical that should not be missed. The performers are excellent, stage, costumes music and lighting were all excellent and would compete easily with any Broadway show Highly recommended. We went to the afternoon show. We are planning to go back for the evening show since some of the cast ma6 be different. 5 stars without any doubt. My only regret is they are not playing longer….I would have loved to bring my grandchildren to see this show!

SOUND OF MUSIC

These young actors did a fabulous job. We enjoyed every minute of this play. I loved everyone of the actors but I have to point out Briana Wilder put chills on my arms. Unbelievable voice. We will definitely be back to see more plays at Rise Above.

GOOD SHOW

The set was great. They did a great job changing the scenes in and out. Kids were great, did a great job with their parts and had great voices. I wasn't thrill with the casting of 'Maria'. Julie Andrews had such a sing song voice and the person cast as Maria seemed to have a flat voice. She knew her part and did it well but her voice was just not suited to play Maria. She had a beautiful singing voice. My favourite part was when The Mother Superior sang Climb Every Mountain - she was fabulous. Didn't like some of the songs in the second half - wish they would have stuck to the Sound of Music songs. Wish they had sang My Favourite Things during the storm scene and not Lonely Goatherd.

SOUND OF MUSIC

Wonderful performance! Mother Abbey was INCREDIBLE! Humor of uncle was perfect and Maria stole our ❤️!!! I would say the baroness was cast too old in my opinion !

OVERALL OUTSTANDING RENDITION OF THIS BELOVED SHOW

I saw this in Syracuse on opening night. The theater was packed and I was transfixed from note 1 to the end. I’m giving it 4 stars because of Maria. I agree with others - she wasn’t awful but she wasn’t right either. She was sprited but lacked depth. To be honest even the Baroness vin Schrader appeared to have more depth than Maria did, which was interesting and somewhat different from the movie. Maria’s voice was a bit nasal and flat. Nonetheless the remainder of the cast was so spectacular that they made up for it, and the lighting and set designs were breathtaking, especially the wedding scene. The feeling of actually being the audience for the von Trapp family singers at the festival was unique, moving, and startling, due to the backdrop. He orchestra was fabulous. I’m so, so glad that I went!

SOUND OF MUSIC IS GREAT

We had a great meal a birraporettis .. then to jones hall for The Sound Of Music Absolutely loved it. The characters were fantastic the music and scenery top notch. So glad we went.. I have to say I was disappointed in how the venue.. handled things.. theatre performances use to be full of class it seems some what disrespectful to go to the theatre in t -shirts,shorts etc. And at intermission people came back with drinks and chip bags crumpling them during the performance very distracting and doors opening and closing the entire performance People just have no class anymore and who brings babies to the theatre to cry.... it is not a movie. To eat popcorn and soda.. wish jones hall would govern that.. hobby center never allows such..

I GUESS I'M A HARD SELL

I grew up on the original Broadway cast album, then saw the movie when it came out in the theater and re-experienced with my daughter, so my expectations are high. All in all, the performances were quite good, but I honestly felt like Maria had been recast as a Disney princess—due primarily to the vocal style (the actress had indeed played a number of them on stage) and ultra-perkiness of the acting (I assume the director had a hand in this). The Abbess was exceptional though, Lisle quite charming, and the sets were both inventive and stunning.

NOT EXHILARATING

It's impossible not to compare it to the film, and who could follow Julie Andrews? Still, I felt the director made some odd choices. Many cast members made amateurish artificial gestures during songs. Why did Maria wrap something around her nightie during the storm? Weird. Why did she prostate herself before the abbess prior to their escape? Super weird. Why did everyone seem to speed through the wedding? Overall the show's tone struck me as too religious. The Abbey setting was dark and somber. That said, I loved the kids, and the abbess' rendition of 'Climb Every Mountain' was a showstopper. Maria's voice wasn't very pleasing to me, and I didn't feel she brought enough depth to her acting, but I wanted to see Julie, of course! The swastikas were chilling. I think the show missed an opportunity by not having the captain urge the audience to join in singing Edelweiss. Would have been risky but might have added some of the heart I felt was missing.

LEFT MORE TO BE DESIRED

The cast’s singing voices were impressive and perfectly on pitch. The acting, on the other hand, felt stiff and amateur. The cast lacked chemistry. They were reciting lines, not absorbing the characters and storylines. Everyone in our group of 4 almost fell asleep. It would help if the cast committed more strongly to being the character and not themself. The story felt disjointed and rushed throughout as a result of some of the director’s choices. There’s hope if the director draws more passion from the cast and reconsiders some of the liberties they took with the story-telling.

SOUND OF MUSIC

This rendition of the Sound of Music was very well done .The musicality ,acting ,dancing ,costumes ,lighting were beautiful and artful .I much enjoyed everything about this production except for the last scene which was over the top in portrayal of the Nazis and Swastikas which were alarming and insulting and unnecessary as the play in itself clearly demonstrated the darkness of those times as a reminder to all of us today.

2.0 star rating Danicia from Inlet, NY

AWFUL

So excited to take my daughter to experience one of my favorite all time musicals. She fell asleep during a matinee!! Too many Abbey scenes. Songs out if context and in wrong locations?? Who sings “A few of my favorite things” at the beginning in the Abbey? Added new songs that weren’t in the original. Very disappointed.
