DIRTY DANCING

WHILE THE DANCING WAS EXCELLENT, THE STORY DID NOT TRANSLATE WELL FROM A MOVIE TO THE STAGE. THE ACTING WAS, AT TIMES, AWFUL, ESPECIALLY BABY'S FATHER. THE SCRIPT WAS WEAK, TRANSITIONS WERE AWFUL. iT SEEMED THAT TOO MUCH WAS PACKED INTO THIS STAGE PRODUCTION., i HAVE TO SAY, IT IS MY LEAST FAVORITE BROADWAY SHOW. THE EXCELLENT DANCING MADE UP FOR THE WEAKNESSES, WHICH ARE TOO MANY TO LIST.

DANCING WAS ONLY GOOD THING

Dancing and the few live singing numbers were great but everything else fell flat. Easy to tell that the performers were dancers and not actors. So disappointed in the performance. They need to rework the script and make the story flow. It felt like they needed to get all the iconic lines into the production and left off the character development and transitions. I saw the production of Flashdance and it was phenomenal! I wasn’t a fan of the movie, but loved the musical! The production stayed true to the spirit of the movie making changes so it would work on Broadway. Dirty Dancing directors and producers- maybe you need to take some notes on how to adapt for Broadway.

DISAPPOINTING

Kevin Patrick Craven's acting saved the show. He was true to character, as were Demitra Pace, Rick Grossman and Owen Russell. The show was disappointing, to say the least, from a true DD fan. They failed to capture the nuances that made the movie so amazing. "Baby" and the romance between her and "Johnny", we're depicted in a seemingly caricature form. No chemistry and awkward transitions. The portrayal of Baby's character was two dimensional at best, whether by the writers or acting, or both. She had a spirit and grit that developed in the movie as she grew into a young woman of confidence and passion, despite her awkwardness at times. The play failed to capture that, and instead, made her a comedy sketch. Baby's and Johnny's journey as individuals and a couple were a central part of the story, for me. The play missed the mark, in more than one way.

FELL SHORT

I too felt like it would be a tribute to the movie. The overall production was small with respect to the number in the cast, costuming, the dance numbers and the music. The dialogue with slow, not nearly as entertaining as the movie. The sound in the theater was good and the orchestra was wonderful, thank goodness. There were a few good comedic moments that made remaining for the entire play doable. . The tickets were given to me by friends. I'm glad that I didn't have to pay for that. I am appreciative of my friends generosity, of course. Robinson auditorium is a newly renovated venue that is enjoyable. There are several wonderful restaurants in the nearby area.

FIFTY SHADES OF DIRTY DANCING

So disappointing. Not a family show, and not suitable for children 10 and up. I saw the movie as a young teen, loved it. This show focused on dancing simulating sex acts, much more risqué than the movie. The description should have stated that so parents could make a more informed decision. I would have left the kids at home. The many drunk people in the amphitheater appreciated those dances, as they were yelling out their appreciation. More suitable for girls night out. Again, the description was not accurate. Only little bits of some original movie songs were included, and the more traditional dances seemed like an afterthought.

PATRICK SWAYZE IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE, YA'LL!

This performance was so disappointing and at times laughable....but not in a good way. It was like a caricature of the movie and the characters. Overacting was key to the laughable moments. They took Baby's endearing character and made her look like a moron. Johnny was stiff and over done with just too much over dramatic acting. Adding in the story line of Mrs Houseman and the MLK movement was awkward and distracting. To follow the dialogue/script/acting exactly throughout the key parts of the play, but then add in additional scenes and dialogue was just plain unnecessary and strange. On a positive note: we loved watching the performances of Penny and Baby's sister Lisa. Both roles were well cast and well done.

NOT EVEN CLOSE.

We attended opening night last night expecting a tribute to the iconic film. We wish we could say it was worth it but couldn't wait for the intermission so we could leave. Not even close to various productions of Jersey Boys Boys or Mama Mia. Very disappointed but we still love the McCallum
